There are absolute minimums that are required to participate in an NCAA athletic program. If you think you are good enough to play Division I (ACC, Big East, SEC, etc.) those minimums are tougher. The official site www.NCAA.org reports that a prospective student athlete MUST have a 2.0GPA and 850 SAT (math and verbal) score to be eligible for Division II athletics. Examples of Division II institutions are Shaw University, Saint Augustine’s College, and Barton College.
[1] Visit the site referenced (ncaa clearing house) under college bound below to find what those core courses are.
Starting with the class of 2008, Division I athletes must have 16 core courses. In addition to the 16 core courses there is a floating scale for GPA and SAT score requirements. For example, if you have a 3.5GPA you need 420 on the SAT (math and verbal). However, if your GPA is 2.0, you need a 1010 on the SAT. Coaches, school alumni, parents, and talent evaluators are not in control of this. The student-athlete is.
