Most Common INJURIES

Sprain- an injury to a ligament-- A stretching or tearing.

(Ligament- is the band of connective tissue that joins the

end of one bone with another, which stabilizes and

supports the bodys joints. )

  • Mild sprain-the ligament is stretched but there is no joint loosening, minimal pain, swelling and little or no loss of function
  • Moderate sprain-partially tears the ligament, producing joint instability and some swelling
  • Severe sprain-excruciating pain at the moment of injury, as ligaments tear completely or seperate form the bone, the joint will be nonfunctional.

Strain- is a twist, pull, and/or tear if a muscle or tendon.  It is usually caused by overuse and sports injuries.

(Tendon- cords of the tissue that attach muscles to bone. )

  • Mild strain-the muscle or tendon is streched or pulled slightly
  • Moderate-the muscle or tendon is overstretched and slightly torn, some muscle function will be lost
  • Severe strain-partially or completely ruptures the muscle or tendon, often incapacitating the athlete
